The eagerly awaited biopic Grace of Monaco opened the 67th Cannes Film Festival in May, starring the luminous Nicole Kidman as actress-turned-princess, Ms Kelly.
The film, directed by Olivier Dahan, follows the eventful life of Princess Grace in 1962—six years after her marriage to Prince Rainer III—as she is forced to sacrifice the bright lights of Hollywood and the lead part in Alfred Hitchcock’s movie, Marnie, to focus on her new regal role.
When it came to designing the ultimate in gorgeous ball gowns, Swarovski was costume designer Gigi Lepage’s first choice for sparkling embellishment. In a central scene depicting Grace’s attendance at the Red Cross Ball, Kidman makes a dramatic entrance in a full-skirted fantasy frock, with embroidered bodice encrusted with around one thousand silver Swarovski crystals. The sumptuous strapless dress featured 150 meters of tulle, and took three weeks to make.
Fit for a princess, indeed…
