If crystal-encrusted, Bollywood-tastic bangles are your idea of heaven, then Chamak by Priya Kakkar is the answer to your accessory prayers.
Meaning ‘to shine and sparkle in a glitzy, glamorous way’ in Hindi, Chamak was launched in April 2005 by New York designer, Priya Kakkar, inspired by the vivid colors of India. A graduate of the Big Apple’s prestigious Fashion Institute of Technology, she worked as an account executive for DKNY, Chanel USA, and Burberry USA before launching her own beautiful luxe jewelry. We listened while the design dynamo mused on her journey so far…
It all started when I was in a meeting on behalf of a client at Henri Bendel, the New York department store… The bangles on my wrist were ones that I had made myself—they ended up buying them for their store! Next thing I knew, I was in the Neiman Marcus Christmas catalogue, and then on the Today show’s Top 10 Christmas Gifts list. The rest is fabulous history!
The colors in India are so rich, and the women mix and match their jewelry in breathtaking ways. I wanted to bring that flair and fashion to American woman.
A woman once sent me a letter saying how much my jewelry meant to her, as an American of Indian heritage. That felt amazing. I love seeing my jewelry in stores, and people wearing my designs—it motivates me to do better.
Crystal is a very powerful magnet for people—it’s beautiful, alluring, and captivating. The colors are vibrant and mood lifting—besides, SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS represent sheer glitz and glam, which is pure Chamak!
I express myself every day through what I wear—dressing is a hugely creative experience for me, as it is for the typical Chamak girl: she’s bold, flamboyant, and certainly not afraid to shine.
