INTERVIEW Arzu Kaprol’s grown-up glamour

for real women

Award-winning, Istanbul-based design talent, Arzu Kaprol, has been diligently carving out a rather fabulous luxury niche for herself on the international fashion stage.

Fashion is in Arzu Kaprol’s blood. Both her mother and grandmother worked as couturiers, and she cites them as her style inspiration. Clearly, their input didn’t go amiss – she made her first silk jersey shirt at the age of twelve!

Having studied fashion in her hometown of Istanbul, where she is still based, she went on to graduate from the Paris American Academy in 1994, and set up her eponymous ready-to-wear label the following year. Success came quite quickly in Turkey, and to date she has five stores there. But it was 2008 when she really started to make her name on the international stage, including being selected for the couture collection space at iconic London store, Harrods, among other luxury stockists. Then, in 2011, she took her first very stylish bow at Paris Fashion Week.

Given her knack for constructing elegant yet striking gowns, it’s no surprise that she’s earning a well-deserved place on the red carpet, dressing the likes of Meg Ryan, Gisele Bündchen, Milla Jovovich and Angela Lindvall. Her Atelier collections boast beautifully crafted pieces, which encapsulate a decidedly grown-up aesthetic with a modern edge. For the past few years, she has been incorporating SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS’ luxe sheen into her pieces. For Spring/Summer 2013, she produced a neatly edited collection featuring carefully sculpted cocktail dresses with exaggerated hip details in delicate, glistening metallics, displaying impressive skill at truly flattering the female form. With peplum-edged jackets reminiscent of the French classic ‘bar jacket’ paired with full, flared skirts, it was a subtle homage to the New Look, but brought resoundingly up to date as she incorporated laser-cut leathers and sexy hits of sheer silks throughout. The delicate color palette was broken up with joie de vivre prints in pretty pinks and purples shaped into edgy bloomer hotpants and angular, cropped jackets. Her skill at cutting and keen eye for how modern women want to be dressed were clear in all this luxe glory. It’s no wonder she’s becoming such a hot ticket.
