Funky, fearless and a whole lot of fun

Upcycled from objets trouvés, yarn, driftwood, metals and crystal, Anna Orska’s approach to jewelry design is elegant, tactile and witty.

SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS are an source of light that add joy, elegance, fashion – even love.

Polish jewelry designer Anna Orska’s first creations were fashioned from ocean treasures, but it wasn’t an iridiscent shell or shiny pearl that caught her gimlet eye: “I was on a Mediterranean cruise when I spotted bits of discarded rope floating in the water, so I dived in and rescued them to make bracelets. Each one had its own history…and smell!”

She sees jewelry as a form of sculpture, as we can plainly see from her distinctively unconventional, maverick methods. The ORSKA brand merges fashion with art, customizing and upcycling ‘found’ items and giving them a new lease of life as simple, powerful jewelry pieces with the same integrity as those early humble rope bracelets.

Two years ago she was fortunate enough to be noticed by the owner of Poland’s most prestigious retail centre. “She loved WENGE, the collection I created from rare types of wood, and asked if I’d like to sell pieces in the Stary Browar shopping complex. Three months later, I started my own business.”

Her summer 2012 collection, REM, was inspired by dream paintings from young Polish artists whose work she captured in her uniquely evocative necklaces, bracelets, rings and brooches. With her left-field approach to design, it should come as no surprise that she designs at night with a backdrop of machine noise: “Working in chaos suits me – it unleashes my creative ideas.”

Partnering with Swarovski means that she has been able to take a new and liberating direction. “My designs are mostly in matt industrial shades of grey, so sparkling SWAROVSKI ELEMENTS are an source of light that add joy, elegance, fashion – even love.”

Whatever and wherever her stimulation – ocean discoveries, industrial minimalism or the wonder of nature – this bold designer is one to watch.
