INTERVIEW TRIP THE LIGHT FANTASTIC

Illuminating a room is key to its décor, says Crystorama

For over half a century, New York-based, family-run Crystorama has led the lighting industry with its distinctive, super-innovative products that are the last word in design, quality and craftsmanship. Founded in 1958 by Abraham Kleinberg, son Brad has worked his way from the sales department to President, while daughter Nancy Lonoff is Marketing Director. Crystorama is certainly doing something amazing, because at last year’s 26th annual ARTS Awards it was honored by the home furnishings industry as the top lighting fixtures manufacturer. The company’s illuminations grace more major buildings and residences than you can shake a stick at—the hallowed halls of the Supreme Court, for example, as well as adding magical sparkle to the Academy Awards ceremony at LA’s Dolby Theatre. So we asked Brad Kleinberg to shed some light on Crystorama’s winning philosophy, and this is what he told us:

While a chandelier is there to provide a function, people today recognize that it’s as personal as selecting countertops, artworks, or sofas. For example, we’re seeing an upsurge in customers installing chandeliers in bathrooms as task lighting, which seems to be a new trend. There’s a far greater awareness of lighting as a key architectural/design element for a space, thanks to the popularity of home improvement television and the vast amount of information people can access from the internet. This goes for all generations—the only distinction is that if you own, rather than rent, your home, you are more likely to invest in lighting your space properly.

No matter your taste, budget or personality, you can always find a hot trend that’s a perfect fit! Boho is huge right now—a mix of bohemian and hippy-looking styles. Then there are the tailored, clean lines of mid-century modern, which has seen new life. Plus you have farmhouse chic—rustic and earthy, but also preppy and mainstream. Crystorama’s relationship with Swarovski dates back over forty years. Swarovski crystal is predominately used in our classic traditional line of chandeliers, but the new unique crystal shapes are ideal for our clean contemporary styles.

Our three-person design team lives and works in New York. As a unique and sophisticated hotbed of innovation, a fashion center, and a cultural mecca, we love the energy it gives our creations. We’re enjoying our partnership with interior designer Libby Langdon. She’s a joy—bright, bubbly and exuding positivity, exactly as she seems on TV. At the January Lightovation Market in Dallas we’ll be launching a second license agreement, this time with Brian Patrick Flynn: an interior designer and TV producer. We’re very excited to be launching his new line in 2017.
