TREND REPORT THE VIEW FROM THE STREET

The sidewalks were scenic at Paris Haute Couture!

There was a single style statement on the streets of Fall/Winter Paris Haute Couture this year: Monochromatic. While it’s one of the simplest ways to gain instant chic, Melanie Galea (thestreetmuse.it) noted that there are two rules to dressing all in one color without becoming a fashion bore:

British-Thai actress Araya Hargate (aka Chompoo) demonstrated the first rule with the kind of dramatic dash that has seen her nail the major red carpets, and get invited to take up an ambassadorship with L’Oréal Paris. The rule is: Keep it interesting with textural contrast. Pleats, embroidery, lace…whatever it takes. Whoever said virginal white couldn’t rock?

Eleonor Carisi, meanwhile, gave vampish black a demure makeover. Perhaps it’s something to do with being covered up top-to-toe, or the soft, flowing drape, or the delicate sparkle of the embroidery. And is that a lace piecrust collar peeking out from under her glossy locks?

There was a perfectly prim note to blogging sensation Chiara Ferragni’s black textured suit, too. She cleverly offset this with funky accessories (we adore that vintage movie camera bag) and a diving décolletage to save the outfit from looking like “routine desk duty”.

At Armani Privé, Chinese actress and former Miss World Zhang Zilin won the front row in a sheer jacket ringed with ruched embellishments, plus midnight satin pants edged with oversize ruffles. Add a slash of red lipstick for a master class in how to go avant-noir.

Leaf Greener, the founder of LEAF WeChat and original digital fashion icon, could only ever go for one color. Yes, you guessed it: Her sculptural, forest-green top gets added three-dimensional impact when teamed with a lime-green clutch.

The second rule is to use your color as a canvas for its counterpoint. Thassia Naves blended shades of sky blue to draw attention to those fabulous gold sandals, while stylist and YouTube queen Chriselle Lim paraded imperial purple. It works because her rainbow-beaded clutch gives just the right amount of visual relief.
