TREND REPORT HOT SHOTS

ITS finalists’ jewelry pieces hit Berlin

After the summer’s excitement in Trieste, the ten International Talent Support (ITS) finalists’ jewelry pieces hotfooted it over the Alps to Europe’s capital of cool, Berlin. What better place to shoot the invariably eye-popping, high-concept aesthetic of these up-and-coming jewelry designers? Fashion photographer and Berliner Christoph Musiol—you’ve seen his distinctive work in GQ, Glamour, Cosmopolitan and Kult, among others—was the eye behind the lens. Styling was courtesy of Berlin-born and NYC/Hamburg resident Sophia Costima, who brought her avant-gardist’s DNA to the imagery. She choreographed a charismatic, off-the-cuff mood, offsetting the jewelry by dressing model Kassandra Jensen in David Tomaszewski, David Koma, William Fan, Hugo Boss, Marina Hoermanseder and René Storck.

Kazakhstan’s Tatiana Lobanova, who landed the Swarovski Award, offered kinetic scope with retro-futuristic sculptural pieces inspired by quantum physics. Their unique energy made for some exquisitely linear shots. Elbow jewelry, anyone? German ITS JEWELRY Award winner Sari Rathel explored gender identity in her work, with one of her designs teamed with a simple silver sheath by Galvan. The idea is that the wearer decides which way to reflect their gender each time they put on a piece—au courant, indeed.

Meanwhile, many pieces reflected a fascination with weight and balance, as seen in the out-there extremes of Xia Xi’s circling orbs, set off with Michael Sontag’s gold pants; the pendulum swing of the necklaces created by Garance Brandely and Gisela Febrina Juwono & Larasati Dewangga Putri and the shimmering-seething necklace invoked by Masaki Shimizu. Then there was the simple drip-drip-drop of Alyssa Lee’s brooch, alongside Elizabeth Lee and Yuanjing Dong’s neck cuffs, representing cutting-edge at its most wearable. Finally, Chinami Tokizawa turned jewelry on its head with a lavishly embellished piece. Take a look at how we’ll be wearing our jewelry in the future.
