Queen Bey and her phalanx of extraordinary dancers opened the 16th annual Black Entertainment Television Awards with a splash on the night of June 26—quite literally, in fact, because her must-see rendition of Freedom was performed on a pool of water at LA’s Microsoft Theater, reflecting her charisma and setting the night’s blazing, high-energy pace. As water was splashed around the stage, the myriad droplets were mirrored by Julien Macdonald’s bespoke Swarovski-crystallized bodysuit, which spectacularly refracted shards of light. Fabulous fringing extending along the lengths of the arms, along with tattoo-inspired tribal swirls, accentuated the astonishing kinetic qualities of a performance that is already set to become legendary. In a word: SENSATIONAL!
