The party’s dress code was ‘Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology’. But, while such a theme would have us mere fashion mortals rushing for the tin foil and DayGlo lippy, this was the Met Gala 2016, the world’s most exclusive ball, where the future can only be FAB-U-LOUS. Scoring top tech-marks as they posed on the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s red carpet were two of our favorite portmanteau couples—Zigi and Kimye. Kendall Jenner and Lady Gaga rocked it in Versace, the former in a laser-cut velvet gown with blue crystal detailing, the latter in a Swarovski-studded gunmetal leather jacket inspired by a computer motherboard, paired with a crystallized purple rubber bustier. Yes.
Elsewhere, Frieda Pinto and Mindy Kaling kept us fascinated with subtle but super-smart interpretations of the theme. Pinto’s elegant ivory bonded-crêpe column gown and Kaling’s boxy clutch—both custom Tory Burch—incorporated electronic ink color-changing crystals specially developed by Swarovski and seamlessly integrated into couture for the very first time. Emma Roberts was also mesmerizing in custom-designed Tory Burch: her halter-top ombré chiffon plissé gown in shades of amethyst and lavender shimmered with heat-sealed Swarovski Crystal Rock fabric.
The hottest label in which to keep your lip gloss was crystal clear: Karlie Kloss, Gigi Hadid, Kendall Jenner, Rita Ora, Elle Fanning, Behati Prinsloo and Sophie Okonedo were all spotted clutching Judith Leiber Couture. Other stars who shone included Allison Williams in custom Peter Pilotto, Elisabeth von Thurn und Taxis in Mary Katrantzou, and Lily Aldridge in Michael Kors. Meanwhile, Michelle Monaghan went for Roxanne Assoulin crystal earrings, and Haim chose crystal-embellished Rodarte heels. Representing the guys, Jeremy Scott smoldered in a crystallized Moschino tux.
