To quote those iconic double-denim enthusiasts, Status Quo, the planet’s favorite utility fabric has indeed been “rockin’ all over the world” this season. Ever the epitome of elegance, Milan kept it classic: Negin Mirsalehi opted for a crisp white shirt, complete with witty patch-pocket design, teamed with mildly distressed denim. Breton-style stripes look good with everything, and Chiara Capitani chose to belt hers into smart high-waisted indigo. Attention to the fancy buckle detail and a full-length sheepskin coat is an inspired way to elevate a popular combo from workaday wardrobe to effortless style.
In opposition, the Paris streets were seen to be flouting the age-old denim-on-denim rule: Never match your shades! Of course “rules were made to be broken”, and Yoyo Cao (the talent behind fashion label Exhibit) commanded attention in uniform denim worn military-style: double-breasted, and studded with oversize brass buttons. Meanwhile, Emilie Higle of My Little Fashion Diary was spotted tearing up the boulevard in Eighties-revival frayed stonewash, her blouson boyfriend jacket perfectly matched with raw cut-off jeans.
Meanwhile, the Jardin Tulieries appeared to inspire a colorful countryside vibe. Floral embroidery gave Soraya Bakhtiar’s calf-length jeans a joyful spring bloom, and Style Heroine’s Evangelie Smyrniotaki livened up her mid-blue, straight-leg ankle-skimmers with an above-the-waist punch of leather appliqué in blazing metallics and shades of red, white and blue on leaf green.
Across the Atlantic, seen on a New York sidewalk, Sofie Valkiers of the Fashionata blog mixed it to the max, sporting sun-bleached to deepest indigo, and every color rinse in between. Her denim-blue plaid coat trimmed with ice-blue fur amped the theme all the way up to eleven. All of which means it's official: the old rule is now history—the new vibe is fifty shades of denim.
