Hair today, gone tomorrow. Actually, Movember participants worldwide will be sporting a mustache in the name of an excellent cause right through until the end of the month. ‘Movember’ (formerly known as November) is a global initiative to raise awareness for funding for research into prostate and testicular cancer, and mental health issues such as depression.
On a global average, men die six years earlier than women, and the World Health Organization estimates that one man commits suicide every minute. Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men worldwide, and that statistic is expected to double by 2030. In addition to sporting a new facial accessory, men will also be on the ‘MOVE,’ aka: a parallel challenge to get their hearts racing in a bid to stem the male health crisis. (Ladies, don’t feel left out—the Movember Foundation is also reaching out to Mo Sistas to create a fundraising page and do some physical activity to make a difference.) Whether it’s running or simply playing ping-pong, any MOVE, big or small, is acceptable. Go for a 10k jog, try out yoga (hey guys, you’re already sporting a mustache—why not go the full hippie?), or simply take the stairs instead of the elevator (yes, that’s you up there in the penthouse).
Last year, more than one million people worldwide supported the mustache to raise $100 million for the cause. Gentlemen: get those mustaches growing. Ladies: get MOVEing asap!
