TREND REPORT A SPARKLING AFFAIR

Paris Couture Week, Fall/Winter 2015/16

The spectacle of Fall/Winter 2015/16 Paris Haute Couture Week (July 5–9) unveiled some of the world’s most elaborately designed, intricately handmade and super-expensive outfits. As ever, it was a feast for the eyes with breath-taking skills on show. Two designers stood out for their ingenious use of crystal embellishment to elevate their work.

Serkan Cura

Turkish designer and graduate of the Royal Academy of Antwerp, Serkan Cura, has been showing his haute couture line for three years now. During this time, his evolution from creating showpieces to designing striking yet wearable garments has gained pace. For Winter 2015/16, he showed decadently crystallized white fur coats, alongside a vibrant red fur gilet worn with a coordinating crystallized top, and an extravagantly tiered dramatic maxi dress. His admiration for the work of legendary corset-maker Mr. Pearl—who also conjures bodices for Jean Paul Gaultier—was evident in his opulently crystal-encrusted corsets.

Dice Kayek

This long-established Parisian couture house, run by Turkish sisters Ece and Ayşe Ege, deftly combines fresh, modern attitudes with impressive artisan techniques. This winter, they set out to seduce their adoring fans with an array of stunning cocktail dresses aimed squarely at the woman who specializes in making heart-turning entrances. Sharply structured mini dresses were given exaggerated skirts designed to sit away from the body, splashed with swirling blocks of crystals in vivid primary colors, while bold shoulder details gave the collection a fierce disco edge. Every one of these pieces would have looked perfectly at home, back in the day, on the dance floor at Studio 54.
