As noon strikes on Saturday, September 19, Munich’s mayor, Dieter Reiter, taps the first barrel to declare Oktoberfest (or, as locals know it, Wiesn), officially open. Dirndls, Lederhosen and colorful outfits celebrating Bavarian volks costume will fill the pavements, but this year we’re in love with the street-style spin on the world’s largest beer festival: Twirl a circular silhouette or full-on maxi in primary brights, then get crafty and add some traditional texture with appliqué, patterned knits and crochet—floral and folklore motifs are everywhere. Sharpen your colors with a crisp white shirt, and crown with a braid or a halo of crimson blooms. The look is pure ‘avant-peasant’. Prost!
