It was the major retrospective exhibition that fashionistas the world over had been waiting for, and Jean Paul Gaultier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk has exceeded all expectations. This spectacular celebration of a remarkable forty-year design career has strutted across continents and wowed more than two million fans so far. Reactions have ranged from delight and fascination at its witty, animated mannequins, to excitement and reverence for its truly iconic creations. We hear that the cone-breasted corset that caused such a stir on Madonna’s 1990 Blonde Ambition Tour has drawn the kind of crowds usually reserved for the Louvre’s ‘Mona Lisa’.
This month the designer’s groundbreaking fashion arrives in Munich, fresh from the Paris leg of its world tour. On September 18, the Herzog & de Meuron-designed, state-of-the-art Kunsthalle will open its doors to Gaultier’s signature rebel-charm. Alongside the headline couture pieces and the sparkling showbiz costumes on loan from the likes of Dita Von Teese and Kylie, he surprises us with fascinating original sketches, film clips, and fashion photography. If you choose one show to see this year, this is the one. Unmissable!
Jean Paul Gautier: From the Sidewalk to the Catwalk is on at the Kunsthalle München, Theatinerstrasse 8, 80333 Munich, from September 18, 2015 – February 14, 2016. Look for #JPGMUC for latest news!
