Joining Swarovski’s 120th anniversary video series is another iconic family-run Austrian brand: Viennese lighting company, Lobmeyr. This month Johannes Rath, Managing Partner of this almost 200-year-old, sixth-generation business, takes us on an exclusive tour through its fascinating history of creative collaboration with Swarovski.
Shortly after the Second World War, Daniel Swarovski and Hans Harald Rath came together to experiment with new lighting ideas. They wanted to explore how crystals could be used in innovative ways to transform the traditional chandelier, and the results were spectacular. This new video takes us up close to a game-changing event in the history of lighting, as Johannes introduces the iconic ‘Sputniks’ of New York’s Metropolitan Opera House in sparkling detail. Made for the grand opening in 1966, legend has it that these startlingly modern chandeliers received the first ovation of the night, out-shining the glittering jewels that adorned the great and the good in the audience. They went on to become symbols of the space age.
Rath then leads us through the fabulously opulent interiors of the Liechtenstein City Palace in Vienna: Here we get the opportunity to see the innovative LED crystal candles specially developed by Swarovski for this architectural jewel in Europe’s crown. Watch the short video for a glimpse of the future of crystal, viewed through the lens of history—it is truly inspiring. Then watch this space for more video celebrations to come from the likes of Tahrun Tahiliani, Tord Boontje, Masha Ma, and many more.
