This year the name on everyone’s lips was Roland Lamb, founder of ROLI, the music-tech start-up: his groundbreaking Seaboard GRAND, which focuses on reshaping music creation, won him the Swarovski Emerging Talent Medal.
As one of the largest and most exciting design destinations in the world, with over 300 events and installations on offer across the capital, the London Design Festival is where design aficionados go to discover the next big thing.
The Leadenhall Building (a Richard Rogers-designed landmark skyscraper affectionately known as ‘the Cheese Grater’) hosted the glittering London Design Medal Dinner, where the Harvard University and Royal College of Art graduate accepted his honor. The Seaboard GRAND was lauded for being a radically new musical instrument that elegantly reimagines the piano keyboard as a soft, sleek and continuous wave-like surface. Enabling musicians to play more expressively, Oscar-winning film composer Hans Zimmer has described Lamb as coming the closest yet to “establishing a new, truly expressive digital instrument.”
Stay tuned to the name Roland Lamb—he is destined to become a major design figure.
