A stunning belted coatdress with generous swathes of glittering blue and white crystals earned Ilaria Marianna Tomasella (from Istituto Marangoni) the Swarovski Award for creativity with crystals. “I imagined that the stones would gush from the seams and create a descending constellation,” she says.
There was an expectant gathering last month at the Premium Trade Show in Berlin as the winners of the i-SKOOL Talent awards were announced. Organized by Isko, the Turkish company recognized as the global authority in denim fabric innovation and production, the bold and visionary i-SKOOL project offers valuable know-how to young artists designing with denim.
One hundred students competed from four of the most important design schools in Europe: Istituto Marangoni, Italy; ESMOD Munich, Germany; Istanbul Moda Academy (IMA), Turkey; London College of Fashion; and Chelsea College of Art & Design, UK. Their task was to develop innovative denim creations in keeping with four main moods: Authentic, Fashion, Future and Recycling.
IMA Fashion Design and Technology program graduate Ekibi-İrem Barkan received the Denim Design Award in the Recycling category; Ruhi Tamer Cogal from Istituto Marangoni won the Authentic Mood prize; the Fashion Mood award was given to Tanya Dimitrova Kancheva from Chelsea College of Arts; and the Future Mood winner was Sabrina Stadlober from Esmod, Munich.
These top-of-the-class talents will receive financial rewards and prized internships with some of i-SKOOL’s partner companies, including Swarovski, so we’re looking forward to dramatic denim innovations still to come.
