Visitors to Baselworld who were lucky enough to bag a ticket to attend the LINK Jewelry Talk on 28 March were dished up with a very lively debate around the topic: The Language of Jewelry: Adornment, Acquisition or Artifact? Hosted by Swarovski and organized by the International New York Times, it brought together a power-panel of some of the most influential names in the business: Carmen Busquets, co-founder of Net-a-Porter; Andrea Morante, CEO of Italian jewelry brand Pomellato; Alberto Baldan, CEO of premium Italian department store chain La Rinascente; and renowned jeweler Shaun Leane.
The discussion ranged from the increase in sales of jewelry to men, to the Asian market’s growing desire for exclusivity, reflecting LINK’s focus on a changing industry in a changing world. Much was said about how jewelry is forming ever-closer relationships with fashion, together with the importance of ‘e-tailing’, with all in agreement that branded jewelry will be the mega-trend. It was Leane, however, who brought everyone back to the essential element: the individual. He described his vision for the “personal brand”, where customers use jewelry to express themselves with the uniqueness of “your own handwriting”.
Learn, Imagine, Network, Know—it certainly lived up to its title at Baselworld. Now the industry looks forward to the next LINK Jewelry Summit April, 2015 in Vienna.
