HATS & HAIR ACCESSORIES

Hats and hair accessories offer women a heaven-sent opportunity to change their look quickly, stylishly and affordably. An elegant chignon held in place with sparkling pins; flirty tendrils pinned up with a lustrous comb; a retro ponytail swept back into a crystal-embellished clasp. Hair accessory designers and brands all over the world are inspired by the rich palette of Swarovski crystals to create classy, witty and alluring adornments.

COLETTE MALOUF

A child of fashion, Colette grew up amid feather boas, lace pajamas and jeweled caftans, thanks to her father’s glamorous loungewear business. She soon segued into business on her own. No surprise, then, that Swarovski crystals feature prominently.

Her first ponytail-holder notched up 100,000 sales in a single year. The following year, 1988, revenues from her hair accessories topped $1 million and she was one of New York Magazine’s rising stars.

Her work never stands still: when she went to Africa it was earthy, organic natural materials. For Spring 2012 it’s the spirit of the ’70s: the sexy wild-child habitués of Studio 54 – Bianca Jagger and Donna Summer, with their glossy red lips and kohl-rimmed eyes. Expressed in bold sweeps of tomato red, lapis lazuli blue and flamingo pink on leather and pop-colored silk, her pieces sparkle with Swarovski crystals. Malouf also handcrafts jewelry – artistic necklaces to drape the décolletage made of seedpods and honeycomb, studded with colored resin and crystals.

Today, her designs are available worldwide: Bergdorf Goodman and Henri Bendel in New York; Beyman in Istanbul; Le Bon Marché in Paris; Fenwicks in London; Colette Malouf (Shinmaranuchi building), Isetan, Hankyu and Mitsukoshi in Tokyo; China World, Parkson and Terminals 2 and 3 in Beijing; Galleria, Lotte and Shinsegae in Seoul; Rouge in Taiwan; Harvey Nichols in Hong Kong; and Tsum in Moscow. Her pieces are worn by the likes of Oprah, Lulu Guinness, Halle Berry and Gwyneth Paltrow, and she has designed for Michael Kors’ and Derek Lam’s shows.
